She is probably one of the most well known victims of Postpartum Depression—her suffering led her to murder five of her children. Right after giving birth, she was immediately struck with postpartum depression, in which she experienced severe hopelessness and misery and attempted suicide multiple times. Her doctor gave her Haldol as the only drug to reduce feelings of depression, but it didn't take long for her symptoms to worsen and eventually turn into psychosis. When she started to have hallucinations and experience complete lack of empathy, that's when she decided to drown her five children one by one in the bathtub.
When she was questioned by the state psychiatrist, "did you think it was wrong to do this," Andrea said, "If I didn't do it, they would be tormented by Satan." After the verdict of not guilty due to insanity defense, Andrea now lives in a mental institute, having survived Postpartum depression and psychosis. Now she's just diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.

Postpartum depression is pretty common among mothers. Approximately 20% of moms suffer some sort of mental illness. However, Postpartum Psychosis is 0.1% of births.
This case could've been completely avoided. Her husband didn't have to leave her home alone with the kids. A much better job could've been done to treat her depression. This case speaks volumes about how much mental illness and its ruthless ramifications could be overlooked by the public and even the people that you've created intimate bonds with.
Although she committed a monstrous act, it's also crucial to realize that she is a postpartum depression survivor—a disorder that is almost impossible to treat alone. Moms are undoubtedly one of the most selfless people on the planet, sacrificing all merits of their life for their children. And they just need to know that it's okay to ask for help for even the most minute, insignificant things.
